Can Equipment You Already Own Help Fund Your Business?

Your next source of capital may already be at work in your business. Eligible machinery, vehicles, or other equipment can sometimes support refinancing or an arrangement that accesses part of the asset's value while you continue using it.

Understand the different structures

Equipment refinancing generally replaces an existing equipment obligation with new financing. Depending on the structure and available equity, it may also provide additional cash. Compare the existing payoff with the new balance, fees, payment schedule, and total cost.

Equipment equity financing uses eligible equipment as collateral. The amount available depends on the provider's accepted value, existing claims against the asset, your qualifications, and the proposed terms. Your original purchase price does not establish how much you can borrow today.

A sale-leaseback works differently: you sell the equipment and lease it back for continued use. That changes ownership. Review the lease payments, maintenance and insurance responsibilities, end-of-term options, and any purchase price required to regain ownership.

Compare cash received with obligations created

The headline financing amount may be reduced by an existing payoff and transaction costs. Ask for the expected net cash to your business and a complete repayment or lease schedule.

Illustration: if a transaction provides $70,000 before a $25,000 existing payoff and $3,000 of costs, the business receives $42,000. That example is arithmetic, not a valuation or offer. Compare the useful cash received with the entire new obligation.

Decide what the capital will accomplish

Accessing equipment value may support a clear operating need, a project, or a broader financing plan. It also commits an asset your business may depend on. Review what happens if cash flow weakens and how the proposed payments affect your ability to keep operating.

Where existing debt is causing the shortage, evaluate the combined obligations before adding financing. Sometimes a coordinated lending and debt review is more useful than a standalone cash request.

Start with an accurate equipment list

Prepare the make, model, year, serial number, condition, location, ownership records, and current financing balance for each asset. Providers may request photos, inspections, appraisals, and payoff statements.
