Inventory Financing: Buy for Demand Without Losing Sight of Cash

An inventory purchase can support growth and still leave a business short of operating cash. The key is connecting the purchase to expected sales, supplier terms, and the financing payments due before those sales become collected revenue.

Understand what the purchase will support

Replenishing proven products is different from taking a large position in an untested line. Review sales history, turnover, seasonality, and any customer commitments behind the order.

Calculate the full cost, including freight, storage, handling, and other expenses relevant to the goods. A supplier discount can be valuable, but buying more than the business can reasonably sell may tie up cash longer than expected.

Compare the funding structure with the sales cycle

Working capital or a business line of credit may help cover eligible inventory purchases. Inventory-backed financing may be available for qualifying assets and businesses. A confirmed customer purchase order for eligible goods may warrant a separate purchase-order funding review.

These structures address different situations. An open-ended stock purchase is not the same as an order with an identified customer, supplier, and delivery schedule. Explain which situation you have so the financing review starts with the right information.

Test the margin after financing costs

Suppose an order costs $20,000 and is expected to generate $28,000 in sales. The $8,000 difference still needs to cover relevant operating, selling, and financing expenses. It is not automatically available profit.

Compare proposed fees and payments with the period needed to sell the goods and collect payment. Consider slower turnover, returns, markdowns, and customer delays. Financing that comes due well before inventory converts to cash can create another funding need.

Prepare the supplier and cash-flow details

Useful information includes supplier quotes, payment deadlines, inventory descriptions, sales history, expected selling prices, and existing obligations. For order-specific requests, add the customer's purchase order and delivery terms.
